The Director's Cut: Roy Ward Baker
Roy Ward Baker is one of the most consistently accomplished of British film directors. The Director's Cut tells the story of his distinguished career in both film and television.
Rising through the ranks of the thirties London studios as assistant to Alfred Hitchcock and Carol Reed, Baker progressed to directing features after the War. He was soon in demand in Hollywood, directing Marilyn Monroe in Don't Bother to Knock and Robert Ryan in the 3D Western Inferno. On his return to the UK, Baker was unafraid to tackle controversial or off-beat subjects - he directed the German prisoner-of-war movie The One That Got Away, the classic Titanic movie A Night to Remember, and the inter-racial drama Flame in the Streets.
The sixties found Baker active in television, directing episodes of The Saint, The Avengers and The Baron. As the decade progressed, he became one of Hammer Film Productions' leading directors. His prolific association with the studio resulted in such classic films as Quatermass and the Pit, The Vampire Lovers and Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde. The seventies and eighties also saw Baker return to TV, directing the popular drama Minder and the mini-series The Flame Trees of Thika.
Writing from the perspective of six decades in the industry, Roy Ward Baker peppers his memoirs with reflections on the technique of filmmaking, the role of the director, and the ups and downs of working with studios, writers, producers and stars. The book is illustrated with many previously unpublished stills from Baker's own collection.
